Message from Mrs. DeGrand: (New!) Dear Families, It was great to have so many visitors at Heritage on Friday for celebrations and popcorn popping. We look forward to seeing many more on Monday for more fall celebrations. On behalf of Heritage, thank you, for supporting our students/teachers in the big and little things that make for happy school memories. Have a great week! In partnership, Megan DeGrand

Message from Mrs. DeGrand: (New!) Dear Families, Last week was Bus Safety Week. On behalf of Saline Area Schools, I'd like to acknowledge our drivers and our families for adhering to and promoting safe behaviors during arrival, dismissal and on the road. Turning left out of our parking lot in the mornings, walking between buses, and not passing a school bus [with flashing lights and stop sign] continue to be areas of focus. Additionally, though our Heritage device policy allows for phones/devices to be out after the bell rings, our transportation staff and SAS administration would like to remind families (students) that appropriate viewing habits are expected on the bus. If students are not engaging responsibly, device use is at risk. In partnership, Megan DeGrand

Message from Mrs. DeGrand: (New!) Dear Families, Thank you to our amazing PTO and Heritage families for supporting our Family Fall Fest last Tuesday and Thursday. It was fun to celebrate the season with our community and seeing everyone beyond our Heritage walls is always fun! In celebrating the season, Halloween does come to mind for many. Your student's classroom teacher will have more specifics on fall classroom celebrations. However, if costumes are a part of classroom activities around October 31, I would like to remind everyone of how cultural appropriation in costumes can be harmful to other students. What is cultural appropriation? Cultural appropriation is the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of an element or elements of one culture or identity by members of another culture or identity. This can be controversial when members of a dominant culture appropriate from marginalized cultures. Examples of cultural appropriation include, but are not limited to, unauthorized use of another culture’s dance, dress, music, language, folklore, cuisine, traditional medicine, religious symbols, etc. (Papalo & DeWald, 2016).
This time of year is exciting for students and families. Thank you in advance for being sensitive to all members of our Heritage and Saline community, while honoring and affirming diverse cultures. Lastly, We wanted to take another opportunity to mention that Heritage has adopted a standards based reporting system and report card for 2022/23 and beyond. For our 4th graders, this is not different from how students were assessed each trimester in grades Y5-3. Fifth grade students have had a one year pause and will now resume standards based reporting this year. Please take a moment to review THIS companion document for understanding how your Heritage student will be assessed and graded this year. Feel free to reach out with questions or concerns. Message from Mrs. DeGrand: (New!) Dear Families, Our Heritage Family Fall Fest gatherings are this week (10/11 and 10/13). We've sold a ton of tickets and it should be a great time. We need you, though! Please consider helping us staff the events by signing up HERE for 1.5 hours slots. Anticipated tasks would be helping set-up or break down the tables, handing out pizza or cider and helping at the pumpkin decorating station or check-in. You may buy tickets HERE. Space is limited and will sell out. The purchase window closes at 11:59 pm tonight (10/9)! Our Heritage Equity Team wants to know more about you. Help us better celebrate and support you and your family by providing us with some valuable information HERE. This information will be shared with teachers and staff only.
