Upcoming Survey Information SAS is preparing to send out an important email that will ask all families to complete a survey (similar to what we did at the beginning of the school year). The survey will ask families to identify the instructional model (in-person or remote learning) that you would like for your student (s) for the 2nd trimester. This email is ONLY being sent to the primary contact that is listed in our Powerschool system. The reason for that is that we only want to receive back one survey per student. If the email address that you received the previous survey to is not correct, or you wish to change that email address, please contact our building secretary, Stephanie Tandy, to make this change by Monday, November 2, 2020. Our Heritage office number is (734) 401-4100. The 5th Corner Teen Center - Fall 2020 Survey (for Students in Grades 5-12) Like many facilities, the Saline 5th Corner Teen Center is contemplating how to open their facility safely and meet the needs of the students who have come to love the programs and opportunities it provides. If you have interest in the 5th Corner Teen Center for your student(s), please complete The 5th Corner Teen Center - Fall 2020 Survey by October 30th for each of your students to help them in thinking about the best ways to meet student needs at this time! Please contact Alex Schukow ([email protected]) if you have questions regarding the survey. Attendance Reminder: Please call the school office to report an absence. Superintendent’s Message (New!) October 21, 2020 SAS Families, Thank you for your patience as we continue to work through the challenges that the pandemic has presented. Our intent was to announce a transition to additional in-person instruction for our current hybrid Y5-5th grade students as early as this coming Wednesday, October 28th. However, based on the recent evidence of local COVID-19 spread, we are forced to delay this decision. Although we are confident in the low infection rate at the lower grade levels (including transmission to adults), the evidence of spread is based on the 25 positive cases per 100,000 people and the 3% (and rising) positivity rate. The county-based spike is a metric that must be watched carefully. Please review the updated schedule below, broken out by grade level:
We are proceeding with caution regarding this local case uptick and it’s important that we approach this together as a community. As holiday and travel seasons are upon us, please keep the safety of our students and staff at the forefront of your decision making. Every extra precaution to stop the spread while not in school is critical for our in-person instructional time. Schools play a critical role in the academic, social, emotional, and physical well-being of our students. We understand that the transitions are difficult for families, however, our administration and staff will continue to pursue the safest opportunities to maximize in-person learning. Please look for information on community Zoom Webinars hosted by our building administration that will take place next week. This will be an opportunity for you to receive additional information, voice concerns and ask any questions you may have. In Partnership, Scot Graden Superintendent Upcoming Survey Information (New!) Principal's Message: (New!) Dear Families, Assistant Principal Deneen sent out an email with some valuable tips for preparing your student for the NWEA next week. We will have tech support in the building for our students taking it on campus AND for our virtual students. Taking a standardized test following 6 months off of school seems daunting, I know. All we need is a good night's rest, a healthy breakfast and for your student to do the best they can. Please reach out to your classroom teacher or the office if you have any questions or concerns. SAS: Important Hybrid-Model Changes: SAS Families, I hope your family is settling into the “new normal” that exists for your student, whatever that may look like. Our staff has worked tirelessly to provide the best education possible to all students, regardless of the delivery platform. Their efforts should be acknowledged and praised given the circumstances. Our students and families have responded with resilience and have shown a tremendous ability to adapt. Virtual families are experiencing a distance-learning model unlike any we have ever seen before. This innovative approach, borne out of necessity, allows students opportunities to learn in both asynchronous (self-paced assignments) and synchronous (everyone learning together) formats. For our hybrid families, students started in-person instruction last week. Our COVID-19 mitigation strategies allow each student two days of face-to-face learning with smaller class sizes, safe transportation, social distancing and mask wearing. Our original published timeline indicated our hope to begin full, in-person instruction on Monday, October 12th. However, given local conditions and internal metrics, we will be extending our hybrid format another two weeks. An updated timeline for your reference is below:
Your flexibility has allowed us to evaluate our systems and plan for the coming trimesters. We will seek additional feedback from you (via survey) in mid to late October. Thank you for your continued patience and support. Sincerely, Scot Graden Superintendent COVID19 Health Screening Form: (New!) Principal's Message: (New!) Happy October, Heritage Families, Week four is in the books! Thank you for the tremendous amount of support it has taken to get Hybrid off the ground, while also keeping our Virtual kiddos on track! Wednesday, October 7th is Count Day. This is an important day for Saline Area Schools because attendance on this day largely determines how the District will be funded for this school year. Therefore, on this day, it will be necessary for us to make a "2-way interaction" with each student. This will mean that all teachers (responsible for taking attendance) will coordinate with their students to be LIVE on this day at the beginning of their class (es). This will primarily be coordinated by a LIVE Zoom call for those students who will be at home (virtual mode) and an in-person attendance check for the students who will be in buildings on this particular Wednesday. This doesn't mean that the students need to stay LIVE all day if that wasn't already the initial plan with the teacher (s). This will look different at the elementary level as it does at the secondary level. If a student is sick or unable to be checking in on this day, there is a process to monitor the student's attendance before and after Count Day for a certain period of time. However, the easiest way to capture attendance on this day is to have your child present for the LIVE check-in activity. Please help monitor your child's teachers' plans for this day in order to have as many students checking in for attendance on October 7th as possible. We appreciate your help in making Count Day (October 7th) run as smoothly as possible. If your student is coming into the building for learning, please make sure they have a labeled paper bag for them to store their masks in during mask breaks. Thanks and have a wonderful week ahead.
